Get a US credit card without an SSN
What decides whether you can get US credit without a Social Security number is mostly one thing: an ITIN, the tax ID the IRS gives people who can't get an SSN. It's the master key — but it isn't the only door. A foreign passport, your credit history from another country, or being added to someone else's card can also get you started. This free checker maps your situation to the real paths, with no login.

This checker is educational only. It is not a credit decision, financial, immigration, or legal advice, or a promise of approval, and issuer policies change — verify current terms with each issuer before applying.
How US credit works without an SSN
ITIN: the master key (Form W-7)
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax-processing number the IRS issues to people who aren't eligible for an SSN, and many lenders accept it to verify your identity on a credit application. You apply with IRS Form W-7, normally with a federal tax return; allow about 7 weeks, or 9-11 weeks in peak season or from abroad. An ITIN doesn't by itself authorize work, but it's what opens the widest set of card options. Verify each issuer's current ITIN policy before applying.
With an ITIN: Capital One secured + ITIN-friendly credit unions
With an ITIN, the most reliable start is a secured card, where a refundable deposit becomes your credit limit. Capital One accepts an ITIN for its Quicksilver Secured and Platinum Secured cards. Credit unions are often the most ITIN-friendly lenders: Latino Community Credit Union and Self-Help Credit Union both list an ITIN as an accepted alternative to an SSN, usually for a photo ID and a small membership. None of this guarantees approval — confirm current policies before you apply.
No ITIN yet: a foreign passport (Zolve)
You don't always have to wait for an ITIN. Zolve is built for US newcomers and can approve you with a foreign passport, no ITIN required, and it reports to all three US credit bureaus — so on-time use builds your US file the same way an SSN card would. Eligibility and reporting terms change, so verify Zolve's current requirements before applying.
Bring your foreign credit (Nova Credit to Chase)
If you have credit history abroad, Nova Credit can let certain US lenders read it when you apply. Among credit cards, Chase is the main issuer that uses it — currently for UK and Canada history — on the Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex. For countries other than the UK or Canada, Nova may translate your file, but few card issuers use it, so check before relying on it.
The authorized-user route
Being added to a trusted person's credit card needs no SSN or ITIN of your own. If they have an old card with a low balance and a clean, on-time record, their history can appear on your credit report and give you a head start. Confirm the issuer reports authorized-user activity first, since not every card does.
Avoid these
Never buy a CPN (a "Credit Privacy Number") to use in place of an SSN or ITIN — selling or using one is federal fraud. And ignore "everyone approved, no SSN" ads: no legitimate lender approves everyone, and cards marketed that way are usually high-fee subprime traps. The honest paths above are slower but real.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a US credit card without an SSN?
Yes. The most reliable way is to get an ITIN (a tax ID from the IRS), which lets issuers like Capital One and many credit unions consider you. No ITIN yet? Zolve can approve newcomers with a foreign passport, and becoming an authorized user needs no number of your own. Verify each issuer's current terms before applying.
Do I need an SSN to get an ITIN?
No — an ITIN is specifically for people who aren't eligible for an SSN. You apply with IRS Form W-7, normally filed with a federal tax return. You don't need to be employed in the US, and an ITIN doesn't by itself authorize work.
How long does an ITIN take?
The IRS asks you to allow about 7 weeks for a decision, and warns it can run 9-11 weeks during peak filing season (roughly January 15 to April 30) or if you apply from abroad. Because the ITIN unlocks most card options, applying early is worth it.
Does this checker affect my credit or store my data?
No. It's educational only, runs entirely in your browser, needs no login, and is not a credit pull. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved, and it has no effect on your credit.
Does an ITIN guarantee I'll be approved?
No — an ITIN does not guarantee approval, and no legitimate lender approves everyone. Acceptance varies by issuer and changes over time, so verify each issuer's current ITIN policy before you apply.
